Painter Iris Scott will be premiering her first performance piece at Filo Sofi Arts in Chelsea this Friday, May 17th at 7:30 PM. Scott, who is known for her colorful "finger-paintings" worked with choreographer Coco Dolle on the interactive performance. Scott will be strapping on a pair of stilts and donning an eight-foot gown that she constructed and painted.  She will be inhabiting the spirit of the Baowry a mythical bird-like creature in a performance that was inspired by the mating ritual of the Bower bird. The artist describes the performance as a "spectacle about evolution, self-expression, and re-adaptation of the past to envision the best possible future." The performance takes place during the run of her exhibition Ritual in Pairing which features a series of large paintings, sculptures, and wearable art.  Curator Gabrielle Autra explains "the exhibition serves as a celebration of nature's unequivocal beauty, as well as an exploration of behavioral instinct, the laws of attraction, and the process through which human beings construct their own identities from their surrounding environment." When viewing the exhibition, we were struck by the dramatic compositions, bright colors, and scale of the paintings. Scott forgoes traditional brushes and palettes knives to work the paint directly with her fingers, often utilizing over one-hundred pigments in each painting.  She refers to her style as Instinctualism, which arouses primal instincts she wants the viewer to have a primal reaction when viewing her work. She says that her work is a reflection "on the concept of self-actualization and the complex relationship between humanity and the natural world."

Filo Sofi is located at 507 W. 27th St. in the brand new High Line Nine gallery space. The building is located below the High Line and adjacent to the Zaha Hadid building. The building is divided into nine gallery spaces ranging from 650 sq. Ft. to 1,800 Sq. Ft. Kasmin gallery anchors the space while Zaha Hadid Gallery/NYC Pop Up and Morgan Lehman Gallery fill two of the other galleries. Markus Dochantschi's international design team designed the interior which features multiple skylights which light many of the gallery's with beautiful natural light. The Filo Sofi Arts presents Scott's work beautifully, and the performance is something not to be missed.
