JENN SINGER GALLERY finds it's own special niche in a beautifully intimate gallery near Gramercy Park. Jenn opened the gallery in May 2015. The gallery showcases emerging and mid-career contemporary artists, as well as a selection of artworks by established post-war modern artists.
I stopped yesterday to talk to Jenn about her gallery and see the current show Modern Summer AbEx+. The gallery is at 72 Irving Place. If you are not careful you can walk by without noticing you are passing an art gallery. Look carefully for the Jenn Singer Gallery sign then walk down one or two steps and you quickly enter a bright sunlight filled space. It is an intimate space and you almost feel like you are walking into an art collectors living room. That feeling is enhanced when you start talking to Jenn. She is a warm, friendly and knowledgeable. A welcome change from the sometimes aloof gallery staff you find in some of the cities galleries. The galleries size allows you to image how the artwork might look and feel in a residential setting. We had a pleasant conversation about the art she was showing, gallery trends, neighborhoods and a little politics. If you are in the neighborhood make sure you stop by to see this jewel of a gallery.
This is from Jenn's press release about the current show.
Modern Summer: AbEx+, offering works on canvas & paper by influential Abstract Expressionists, hand selected from an important private collection in New York City.
Bright raw colors, rough edges and spontaneity define the seven paintings on view by established modern artists including Paul Jenkins, Syd Solomon, Robert Natkin and Stanley William Hayter – all who have enjoyed prominent exhibition histories and whose works are held in the permanent collections of top institutions including MoMA, the Guggenheim, the Whitney and the Tate. With a focus on pieces from the 1970s & 80s, the exhibition succinctly captures the power, uniqueness and historical import of these post-war modern artists working at the height of their careers.
